Using access keys to navigate around this site

We aim to make our web site accessible to as many people as possible and are implementing the UK Government access keys system.

Access keys are keyboard shortcuts which allow a user to navigate a web site without using a mouse or other pointing device. This can sometimes be quicker and may assist those with motor skill difficulties.

How do I use access keys?

This depends on the browser you are using:

If you use Internet Explorer

  1. Press and hold the 'Alt' key
  2. Press the required letter
  3. Release the keys and press the 'ENTER' key

If you use Netscape Navigator

  1. Press and hold the 'Alt' key
  2. Press the required letter

If you are using a Mac

  • Substitute the 'Ctrl' key for the 'Alt' key.

How do I use the access keys on this web site?

This web site uses the UK Government access key system. The following information details each of the keyboard shortcut commands available to you.

  • [S] Skip to Content
  • [1] Home page
  • [2] Latest News
  • [3] Site map
  • [4] Not in use
  • [5] Not in use
  • [6] Not in use

Depending on your browser type use one of the following:

  • Internet Explorer 5+ (PC) Hold down the ALT key, press the number of the access key, release both keys then press ENTER
  • Internet Explorer 4 (PC) Hold down the ALT key and press the number of the access key
  • Internet Explorer 5+ (Mac) Hold down the CTRL key and press the number of the access key
  • Internet Explorer 4.5 (Mac) unfortunately access keys are not supported
  • Netscape 6 and earlier (PC and Mac) unfortunately access keys are not supported
  • Netscape 7 (PC) Hold down the ALT key and press the number of the access key
  • Firefox, Mozilla (PC) Hold down the ALT key and press the number of the access key.
  • Firefox, Mozilla (Mac) Hold down the CTRL key and press the number of the access key
  • Safari and Omniweb (Mac) Hold down the CTRL key and press the number of the access key
  • Opera Hold down the Shift key and press Escape, release both keys, then press the number of the accesskey

There is a known problem, though, as numeric access keys do not work at all in Firefox 2.0. That means that the functionality of all websites that have been using numeric values for access keys will no longer work in Firefox 2.0, including all UK public sector websites following e-GIF recommendations.
