Werneth is changing

To play

Park life is rife in Werneth. Whether you're seven or 70 you'll love the area's grassy spaces – ideal for charging around, letting off steam, or idling in the sunshine with a paper and a picnic.

The stately Werneth Park has been around since 1847 and it's one of Oldham's greatest green lungs. Plans are afoot to restore the music rooms and genteel conservatory, too. One day, these could again be elegant venues for events.

Shrubs hand-picked for their heady fragrances, climbing plants, water features and wooden sculptures are all part of an amazing sensory garden here.

Werneth's community spaces - Tamworth Street Park and the Milne Street kickabout pitch and children's play area – have all seen some serious TLC from the authorities recently and are great places for families to hang out. Into cricket? Werneth Cricket Club has been around at The Coppice since 1864 and sits proudly in the Central Lancashire League. Or perhaps you're a king or queen of clubs. Werneth Golf Club, a bone fide ‘hidden jewel' of the area, has a lovely 18 hole golf course at Garden Suburb.

There are plenty of friendly pubs and community groups, and places of worship, too.
